How To Operate a John Deere X390
Product Features
Built To Perform
25.5 HP Kawasaki FR730V — the biggest engine in the X300 lineup
Commercial-grade Kawasaki FR-series V-Twin paired with John Deere's iTorque™ system delivers 23 hp of pulling power. Extra headroom for tall grass, hills, and heavy attachments — with consistent RPM at the deck for a beautiful, level cut every pass.
54-in. Accel Deep™ Mower Deck with optional MulchControl™
Premium Powertrain turns inside a standard tight-turn radius — hug every tree, hydrant, and flower bed without leaving strips. The 54-in. Accel Deep™ stamped-steel deck also cuts your mow time by ~29% versus a 42-in. deck. One-touch MulchControl™ (optional) lets you flip between mulching, side discharge, and bagging modes on the fly — a beautiful lawn, fewer fertilizer needs, no clippings on driveways.
K66 Hydrostatic Transaxle · Twin Touch™ pedals · Cruise Control
Heavy-duty K66 Tuff Torq® hydrostatic transaxle with an oil cooler stays cool under load. Twin Touch™ pedals for effortless forward/reverse without shifting, cruise control for long straightaways, and an 18-in. high-back adjustable-suspension seat for all-day comfort.
Mow, mulch, haul, and bag through spring, summer, and fall — then tackle winter with a front blade or 44-in. snow blower for easy snow removal. A single tractor that works every season, backed by a 4-year / 300-hour bumper-to-bumper warranty.

Best Mower I've Owned!
Finally upgraded my old rider to the X390 this spring and let me tell you, it's a dream. My 2-acre lot used to take forever, but with the 54" Accel Deep deck, I'm done in no time. The cut is so clean and even. The Kawasaki engine just purrs, handles the slopes in my yard with no strain at all. Worth every penny. My wife even commented on how much nicer the yard looks.

Handles everything I throw at it
Got the X390 last year for my 3-acre property. I'm not running a full farm anymore, but there's still plenty of ground to cover. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine is a powerhouse, never bogs down even in thick, wet grass after a rain. The K66 hydrostatic transmission is smooth as silk, makes navigating around the old oak trees a breeze. This machine is built to last, just like a Deere should be.

Great mower, few minor quibbles
I bought the X390 based on recommendations from neighbors. My nearly 2 acres get pretty shaggy down in the back pasture, and the 54" Accel Deep deck really makes short work of it. The cut is exceptional, very even. The Kawasaki engine starts right up every time. My only minor complaint is the seat could be a bit more comfortable for longer mowing sessions, but overall, it's a solid 4-star machine.

Reliable and Powerful
After retiring, I wanted a mower that would make yard work less of a chore. My 1.5 acres has some tough desert grasses, and this X390 with its 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine just eats them up. The K66 tranny makes changing directions simple, which is key for all the landscaping I have. Best investment I've made for the property. This ain't my daddy's tractor, but it's just as tough.

Perfect for Florida Yards
My St. Augustine grass grows like crazy down here. The X390 with the 54" Accel Deep deck is perfect for getting through it in one pass. It leaves a beautiful, clean cut every time. The K66 transmission makes maneuvering around my palm trees and flower beds effortless. No more straining or wrestling with the machine. My back thanks me after every mow. Couldn't be happier with a John Deere.

Solid Performer on Hills
My property is just under 2 acres but very hilly. My old mower always struggled. The X390's 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine combined with that K66 hydrostatic transmission powers right up every incline. I was surprised at how stable it feels. The 54" deck cuts a wide path, so I'm done faster and can get back to enjoying my weekends. Highly recommend for any homeowner with challenging terrain.

Deere Quality Shines Through
My father always swore by John Deere, and now I see why. This X390 really lives up to the name. The 54" Accel Deep deck provides such a superior cut compared to my previous mower. Even with the wet spring we've had, the Kawasaki engine just starts right up and handles the thick grass without a hitch. It makes maintaining our 2.5 acres feel a lot less like a chore.

Built Tough for My Yard
I'm a contractor, so I appreciate good equipment. Bought the X390 for my own 1.7-acre spread. This machine is solid. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine has plenty of grunt, and the K66 tranny is super responsive. I've got some odd angles and landscaping features, and it navigates them perfectly. The 54" deck means fewer passes. I expect this Deere will last me many, many years.

Smooth Ride, Great Cut
I absolutely love my new X390. I have a little over an acre and I used to dread mowing. Not anymore! The 54" Accel Deep deck gives such a clean, manicured look to my lawn. The ride is so smooth with that K66 transmission, makes it easy on the back. And the Kawasaki engine starts instantly. It's truly made yard work enjoyable, which I never thought I'd say!

Powerful and Agile
After serving, I appreciate things that just work. The X390 is one of those things. My 2.2-acre yard can be a beast in the humid Texas heat, but the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine handles it with ease. The K66 transmission is so precise, letting me cut around flower beds and trees without a problem. And the 54" deck minimizes my time in the sun. A truly dependable machine.

Excellent Quality, Easy to Use
I'm a grandma who loves her garden, and the X390 makes keeping the lawn tidy a breeze. With almost 2 acres, I need something reliable. The 54" Accel Deep deck leaves a beautiful finish, and I love how easy it is to adjust the cutting height. The Kawasaki engine starts up with no fuss, even after sitting for a bit. It’s a very user-friendly tractor, perfect for me.

Winter Workhorse Too!
I use my X390 year-round. Beyond the excellent mowing with the 54" Accel Deep deck on my 1.8-acre lot, I attach a snowblower in the winter. That 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine doesn't skip a beat, even in heavy snow. The K66 hydrostatic is key for maneuvering around the driveway. This tractor is not just a mower, it's a true utility machine. Very happy with its versatility.

Precise Cut for a Large Lawn
Maintaining a larger property in the Bay Area means precision matters. The X390 with its 54" Accel Deep deck delivers. My almost 2 acres never looked better. The tight turning radius with the K66 tranny makes it easy to get around my landscaping. The Kawasaki engine is quiet and powerful. It’s an investment, but one that truly pays off in time saved and a beautiful finish.

Robust and Reliable in the Heat
Our 3-acre homestead means lots of mowing, especially in the Texas heat. The X390 with the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine never struggles, even when the grass gets thick and tough. The 54" Accel Deep deck sails through it all, leaving a clean, consistent cut. The K66 transmission is smooth and makes for easy operation. This tractor is built for the long haul, and I appreciate that.

As a veteran, I value reliability, and this X390 provides it. My 2.5 acres have some tricky areas. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine has all the power I need and then some. The K66 hydrostatic transmission is so smooth and responsive, makes navigating around obstacles a breeze. The 54" deck gets the job done quickly and the cut quality is outstanding. Handles Hills Like a Champ!
In the mountains of NC, you need a mower that can handle inclines. The X390 does just that with its strong 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine and the K66 hydrostatic transmission. It climbs my slopes without breaking a sweat. The 54" Accel Deep deck makes quick work of my 1.8 acres, and the cut is always even, even on uneven terrain. This mower is truly impressive.

Beautiful Cut for a Large Yard
I got tired of my old mower and invested in the X390 for my just-over-an-acre lot. The difference is night and day. The 54" Accel Deep deck delivers a pristine cut, leaves no clumps, and makes the lawn look professionally done. The Kawasaki engine is so smooth and quiet too. This machine is a joy to operate; I actually look forward to mowing now.

Super Easy to Operate!
My husband usually mows our 2 acres, but I took a turn on the X390 and was surprised how easy it was! The K66 hydrostatic transmission makes it very intuitive to drive. The 54" deck covers a lot of ground quickly, and the grass always looks so nice. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine has plenty of power. So happy with this purchase, it's a real workhorse for our property.

Built Like a Tank, Cuts Like a Dream
Our 1.5-acre property has tough Fescue grass. My old mower would struggle, but this X390 with its 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine just powers right through it. The 54" Accel Deep deck gives a perfectly even, clean cut every single time. You can feel the quality in this machine. The K66 transmission makes it a pleasure to operate, even around all my landscaping. Solid Deere.

Good for Tough Desert Growth
My 2-acre lot here in New Mexico has some pretty tough, dry grasses. The X390, specifically the 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine, has no problem with it. The 54" Accel Deep deck makes short work of the sparse but resilient growth. The K66 hydro is smooth. My only reason for 4 stars is that it's a bit overkill for some areas of my yard, but for the main lawn, it's fantastic.

Handles New England Seasons
I've had my X390 for two full seasons now, and it's been great for my 1.6 acres. The 54" Accel Deep deck is fantastic in the spring for thick growth, and the Kawasaki engine has never let me down. I also use it with a cart for hauling firewood in the fall. The K66 transmission is crucial for navigating my uneven terrain. It's a reliable machine through all our crazy weather.

Exceeds Expectations for My Acreage
With just over an acre, a good mower is essential. The X390 has exceeded my expectations. The 25.5 HP Kawasaki engine is incredibly strong, and the 54" Accel Deep deck delivers a beautiful, consistent cut across my entire property. The K66 hydrostatic makes zero-turn feel easy. It’s comfortable to operate, even during the longer mowing sessions. Truly a top-notch machine.

54-inch deck cuts a huge amount of time
The width difference over the 42-inch decks is real. On 4 acres, that's 20+ minutes saved per mow. Add the Kawasaki 25.5 HP and this thing is unstoppable.

Hills? What hills.
25.5 HP iTorque + K66 transaxle = flat out muscle. My property has a nasty grade and this tractor doesn't even breathe hard. Cruise control on the flats saves my leg.

Runs a snow blower + front blade like a champ
Full welded frame, K66, and 25.5 HP — I run a front blade AND a 44-inch snow blower depending on the storm. Best year-round tractor I've owned.

Cut quality is the reason I'd buy it again
Third season on the X390 and the finish is still dealership quality. Even in thick spring growth it lays the grass over cleanly in one pass instead of leaving stragglers I have to go back over.

Starts on the first turn, every time
Cold mornings, hot afternoons, sitting three weeks between mows — the X390 fires right up. No surging, no stalling when I drop into taller grass.

Comfortable enough for a two-hour mow
The seat and control layout on the X390 are genuinely well designed. I do about two hours at a stretch and get off without a sore back, which was never true of my old machine.

Better value than the box-store brands
I shopped the orange and red brands first. For the build quality and warranty, the X390 was the easy call — and Deere resale value is in a completely different league when you go to sell.

Maintenance is homeowner friendly
Oil, filter, blades and grease points on the X390 are all easy to reach. No pulling half the machine apart to do a routine service like some of the competition.
